My Dad can't manage to swallow his food

Care Portfolio ... why not???

Hello to you, Jill

I saw your blog post earlier, and didn’t know how to get you moved into the main forum. But you found the way.

Please ask your Dad’s GP to answer your questions, or if your Dad’s in a care home (which I get the feeling he may not be) ask the Care Home Manager to ask whichever GP is in charge of your Dad’s care.

Sometimes, when someone lives in a care home close to where they lived before, then they will keep the same GP in their Care Portfolio. Otherwise, if they live in a care home outside their own GP’s boundaries, then they may well be registered with whichever GP surgery is ‘taking care’ of that particular care home.

What a good idea, a Care Portfolio for anyone needing ... care. [Why have I not thought of that one before??? Dunno. But I have now.}

Because that would require the Care Portfolio to accompany them from A to B and to C or to ... and so on. Full of explanations about what happened before, during and after .... And all updated to date.

Please ask the GP, or the Consultant, or the Nurse visiting, if you have one of those rare beasts. Because swallowing problems should not be ignored. Sometimes they are nothing to worry about; sometimes it may require a visit by a dentist; but they can also be serious unless assessed and treated appropriately.

And if anyone ever suggests using a syringe to introduce fluids, then ask the most enormous number of questions. But that will hopefully not happen to you and your Dad. If it does, ask even more questions.
